The Games
in Detail |
Jeu d'Amitié - The Dragons'
Lair
The
opening game - 'The Dragons' Lair (Jeu d'Amitié)' - was a standard game used throughout the
series which involved two competitors per country - one male and one female -
who had to climb up inside an angled perspex tube which lead to a platform
guarded by a dragon. Once on top, the male competitor had to break through a
polystyrene cover and descend into the cave beneath the platform. He had to
remove a treasure chest from the cave, handing it to his partner above and
then climb a rope to escape the cave. From the top of the platform, both
players had to slide down through the tube and run back to the start with the
chest to finish. This was varied slightly for the International Final - please
see the notes for that event.
Game 7 (Jeu Handicap) - The Slippery Wall
The seventh game - 'The Slippery Wall' (Jeu Handicap) - was a standard game
used throughout the series. In this game a team member had to dive under water
to look for pieces of rope. A second team member had to throw them up to a
girl on a balcony. She attached them together and when all rope pieces were
combined, she had to hang the rope out and the "diver" had to climb to the
balcony, using this rope.
Game 8 - 18th Century
Musicans
The
eighth and final game - '18th Century Musicians' - was a standard game used
throughout the series and was notable for being the last 'final game' in
Jeux Sans Frontières history that was not played on water. To begin with,
one player handed a musical instruments each to three competitors who were
balanced on rocking chairs. Then the first player had to run to the other side
of the field to move a statue (containing a fellow team member) down the
course by walking on a cylinder. On his way, he had to take back the three
instruments from the balancing players. When the cylinder reached the finish
line, the player balancing on it had to jump off and run to the other side of
the course with the three instruments to finish. |
Looks
Familiar? |
A variation of
the fourth game - 'The Astronauts' - was later played as Game 9 - 'La Pesca
Spaziale' (Space Fishing) - in Heat 5 of the 1999 Jeux Sans Frontières. |
Additional Information |
The cost of a ticket of entry for each of the 1996 events was
15,000 lire. |

The Games
in Detail |
Game 6 - The Olympic Games
Game 6 - 'The Olympic Games' - actually was a game about three
sporting disciplines and three competitors played it. Three players first had
to jump on a trampoline and hit a target with their helmets. Secondly, they
had to jump over a horizontal bar and finally, they had to swim across the
swimming pool. To finish the course, competitors had to climb on to a podium. |
Looks
Familiar? |
A similar version of Game
5 - 'The Tangled Spaghetti' - was played again in Heat 9.
JSF
1993 Heat 2 and
JSF 1999 Heat 1 each featured a game of following a rope and
struggling through a knot. |

The Games
in Detail |
Game 8 - 18th Century
Musicians
The Italians were penalised on the final game - '18th Century
Musicians' - for a
transgression. This left them in last place on the game and with a joint-last place
finish in the competition overall. Even without the disqualification on the
last game, the Italians were already out of contention for the win. |

A similar version of Game 4 - 'The Trapeze Artistes' - was played again
in Heat 3 of JSF 1999,
on which occasion it was called 'Il Trapezio' (The Trapeze). |
Additional Information |
The Greek team of Kalimnos qualified for the International
Final from this heat with a 3rd placing, and in doing so, became the last team
in Jeux Sans Frontières to qualify with this position. After Kalimnos,
all twenty-one remaining finalists in the 1997, 1998 and 1999 editions
qualified with either a 1st (12 teams) or 2nd placing (9 teams). |

The Games
in Detail |
Game 5 - The Floating
Bicycles
In the
fifth game
- 'Balloon Cycle' - two players from each country had 1 minute and 30
seconds to go over a bumpy beam on bicycles (a la
JSF 1995
Heat 4) with bunches of balloons attached to them. However, this game went
terribly wrong for the Portuguese team of Lamego. One of the Portugese
bicycles became derailed and they got a second chance, but once again a
bicycle derailed. They eventually placed last on the game. |
Additional Information |
The team from Budapest, V
Kerület were shown on
the scoreboard as 'Belváros-Lipótváros', the name of the district. We have
elected to use the district number to keep consistency throughout the JSFnetGB
site. |

Presenters, Officials and Production Team |
International referee Denis Pettiaux used to work at the circus as an
acrobat. For this competition he came up with a circus act and entered the
area with on a tiny bicycle, carrying assistant referee Carlo Pegoraro on his
shoulders! |
Looks

Two years after this event, the
sound effect which preceded the background music played in Game 4 -
'The Gladiators' Carousel' - would re-appear in the 1998 series of Jeux Sans Frontières
to highlight the playing of Jokers. |

Game
1 - 'Saving Food from Kallikantazaroi' - was based upon a Greek folk
tradition. A Kallikantazaros (Καλλικάντζαρος) is a malevolent goblin that is
supposed to dwell underground for most of the year. The Kallikantazaroi spend
the year sawing at the tree that holds the world together, with the intention
of bringing it and the Earth down. The coming of the winter soltice brings
them to the surface and during the twelve days of Christmas from 25th
December, they forget about the tree and cause trouble for mortals. On the
Epiphany (6th January), they return beneath ground to find the World Tree has
healed itself, so they start sawing once more - a yearly cycle. |

The
Rehearsals |
The
Lumino team lost one competitor to injury during rehearsals on the night before
recording. The accident happened during the Jeu d'Amitié - 'The Dragons' Lair' - and
unfortunately, the worst was still to come for the Swiss team. |
The Games
in Detail |
Fil Rouge - Balloon
Baseballs
The Fil Rouge was played by four players. Three of them,
hanging from ropes, had to pass water balloons from one to the next in line.
When the third (and highest hanging) player received the balloon, he had to
throw it to a fourth team member - a girl - who had to burst it with a
baseball bat.
Slovenia was the only team to perform this task, bursting one water balloon in
47 seconds, giving them the 6 points. None of the remaining teams scored at
all and were all awarded just one point each.
Comments:
There were only three other occasions in the history of Jeux Sans
Frontières where a game would end with one team winning and all the
others being placed last
- in Game 2 of JSF
1972 Heat 5 at Nice, France; in Game 2 of
JSF 1988
Heat 4 at Sevilla, Spain; and in Game 3 of the
XMAS 1990
special staged in Macao. A similar incident, although the
opposite (six winners and one last place), had occurred during the
JSF 1970
series when the programme was staged at Lugano in Switzerland. |
|
Looks
Familiar? |
Game 6 - 'The Tangled Spaghetti' - had previously been played in Heat 4.
However, unlike in that event, on this occasion not one player made it to the
end of the course! |
Additional Information |
Following injuries suffered in both runs of the
Jeu d'Amitié - 'The Dragons' Lair' - to two of their competitors - one male and
one female (in addition to the player injured on the game during rehearsals
the night before) - the Swiss team from Lumino
announced their intention to withdraw from the event. Judging the game to be
unsafe, referees Denis Pettiaux and Carlo Pegoraro decided that the first game
should be abandoned and awarded each team, including the Swiss, four points.
The event continued with five teams only and the Swiss did not subsquently
appear on the scoreboard. This was not the first
time that a team had withdrawn from a JSF competition, as in the Christmas
Special of 1982 the Belgian team of Blankenberge had pulled out of the
competition after organisers demanded a restart of the event at a time when
the Belgians were leading. |

The Games
in Detail |
Jeu d'Amitié - The Dragons'
Lair
As in all the heats of the 1996 series, the first game contested was the Jeu
d'Amitié - 'The Dragons' Lair' (see 1996 Heat 1
notes), but the game was altered for the International Final. It
was played with three players (two male, one female) rather than two (one
male, one female) and all three competitors had to descend into the cave and
climb back out. |
Additional Information |
Kecskemét of Hungary's win in this International Final was somewhat momentous.
It marked them out as the only town in the entire history of Jeux Sans Frontières
to have won two International Finals (they also won in 1993). |
