Additional Information |
This was a special two-heat invitation competition between the five best
placed teams that did not qualify for the International Final, plus one team
from the host town of Alba di Canazei (in the Val di Fassa) and another from
San Marino. Unfortunately, Cefalù declined the invitation just four weeks
before the competition, and a team from the ski resort of Madesimo (also in
the Val di Fassa) was hastily put together to replace them. Each of the two
events comprised of twelve games.
The
overall winner was decided by their aggregate placings over the two heats.
Each heat winner scored 7 points, with 6 points for a second place finish -
and so on, down to 1 point for the last placed team.
Unfortunately, there were major errors made with the scoreboard and ranking
information across the two heats, including the team of Madesimo inexplicably
having 2 pts removed from their score before the results of the Fil Rouge were
announced. With the points reinstated, they actually finished 5th and not 6th
as given in the programme.
The
first game in both of the Giochi Sotto l'Albero heats was an election game
and, before the start, each team was asked which team they would like to
'match' with in the game. All teams played in this game (unlike the election
games seen in the 1988,
1989 and
1994
series of Jeux Sans Frontières, in which teams scheduled to miss a game
would nominate a team to score for them) and when the points were awarded,
each team received their customary points for their placing and these were
combined with the score of the matched team. This was the only time such a
system was used in any JSF competition.

Additional Information |
Recoaro Terme and Val di Fassa were each awarded 7 ranking points in this
second heat, as they finished in a joint first place. Unusually, the 3rd
placed team - Madesimo - were awarded 6 pts rather than the expected 5pts,
with the points awards continuing in this fashion down to 2pts rather than 1pt
for San Marino's last placed finish. This decision affected the final score,
which if scored in the traditional fashion would have meant that Val di Fassa
would have finished joint second in the final rankings (see below) with the
other two 2nd placed teams (Castiglione delle Stiviere and Riccione) rather
than in 4th place.
The points totals shown on the scoreboard were correct in this
second heat, but there was some confusion with the first three games. The
ranking points were displayed before 1st game but after the 2nd game when all
the running total points were displayed, some teams had more points than they
should and some had less! |

Additional Information |
This was one of those instances when the scoreboard really failed to
impress. When refreshing to reveal the final results, combining the rankings
from Heats 1 and 2, the scoreboard inexplicably added on points to the team
totals - no single team's ranking points were shown correctly. Placings were
correct with the exception of that of the Riccione team which was given as
finishing in 4th place when they actually achieved a joint 2nd place finish
along with Castiglione delle Stiviere and Val di Fassa. The latter team,
despite being clearly shown as finishing with the same points score as the
Castiglione delle Stiviere team, were placed 3rd on the scoreboard, but this
could have been down to a limitation in the computer software.
The original scoreboard is displayed below, and it has been corrected for that
seen above.
