The Host Town

Fuenlabrada, Spain

Fuenlabrada is a city and municipality of Spain located in the Community of Madrid. As of 2018, it had a population of 193,586, making it the region's fourth most populated municipality. Its name derives from the contraction of 'fuente labrada', Spanish for 'carved fountain'.

There is evidence of human settlement in the area dating back to the Paleolithic (La Cantueña) and the Bronze Age (Casas del Cerro). Other settlements in the current municipal area, including Loranca, Albas and Fregacedos, existed during the Upper Middle Ages.

The founding of the village of Fuenlabrada can be traced to the late 14th century, when it was populated by former inhabitants of the nearby settlements of Loranca, Albas and Fregacedos. The first mention of Fuenlabrada, which by the early 16th century was part of the Land of Madrid, was recorded later in the century, during the reign of Philip II, in the so-called Topographic Relations of Philip II.

While the agricultural sector of the economy remained dominant, the making of rosquillas and buns in the municipality became renowned among the surrounding towns by the end of the 19th century. Following the end of the 1936–1939 Civil War, in which some parts of Fuenlabrada endured serious damage, the Dirección General de Regiones Devastadas undertook some building works in the municipality during the 1940s and 1950s.

Fuenlabrada witnessed a dramatic population explosion in the 1970s and 1980s, due to large scale immigration of young workers coming from the capital city and other agrarian regions (chiefly Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha, Andalusia and Galicia) seeking affordable prices in housing. Going from 7,369 inhabitants in 1970, the municipality reached a population of 18,442 by 1975, and 65,181 in 1980, credited as the biggest relative population increase in Spain during that decade. Foreign workers have also settled in the city, most of them coming from Latin America, Africa, the Maghreb, China and Romania. The demographic growth has continued in the ensuing decades.

The city is home to basketball team Baloncesto Fuenlabrada. Their home games are played at Fernando Martín sports centre, which has a capacity of 5,700.

CF Fuenlabrada is the local football team, playing in Segunda División (second tier in Spanish league). They play as home team at the Estadio Fernando Torres, inaugurated by the footballer's parents on 1st September 2011. The stadium has a capacity of 7,500.

Since 1979, the municipality has been a stronghold of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) and has been part of the so-called "red belt" of the Community of Madrid.

Additional Information

Despite the Christmas topic, this programme and the two that followed it were recorded in the days following the 2024 Grand Prix summer final. This was a budgetary consideration, meaning that the studio set did not have to be struck, stored and later re-erected - and so that the recording block included all 2024 Grand Prix episodes. A similar decision in 1994 lead to the Jeux Sans Frontières International Final and Christmas special being recorded at the same venue (Caerdydd/Cardiff, Cymru/Wales) days apart.Something similar happened during the 1994 christmas Jeux Saans Frontieres episode, which was recorded right after the final.

Together with Cristinini, another co-host, famous Spanish YouTuber Mikecrack (real name: Miguel Bernal), commented on the games for this edition.

Mayors did not take part in the Christmas Grand Prix programmes in quite the same way as in the standard series. Instead, a youngster from each town filled this role, being presented as Jr. Mayors from each team. The real mayors were still in the show as members of the public, which consisted mostly of kids and teens from the towns. Both Junior and Senior Mayors took part in 'The Dictionary'.

Instead of winning the Jokers in the first game, patrons had to select gifts from Santa's Sack to see how many Jokers they were awarded. Alfacar got 2 and Binissalem 1.

Alfacar's player lost the blind goggles during the game. He stopped while referee Asun Langa put them back on.

For the first time in Grand Prix history, a musical interlude was played before the final game, with the group Los Cocodrilos performing their hit Voy a pasarmelo bien (I'm going to have a good time).

Alfacar stormed this semi-final by winning five of the seven first games and drawing the other two. Despite this, Binissalem narrowly won games 8 and 9 which provided a welcome boost to their score. However, their performance in 'The Dictionary' only cemented their failure, dropping six points across the first two rounds. This meant that they were mathematically unable to beat Alfacar's worst possible score and therefore no further dictionary rounds were played.

Additional Information

In Game 1, Aguilar de Campoo lost one of the plates since they got it from the Olvera competitor's table. They still won the game.

The mayor of Olvera could not attend this programme, so the town's deputy mayor took her place.

In the first round of 'The Mathematician Penguins', one of Olvera's players was initially eliminated. However, after a series of replays, referee Asun Langa decided that the Olvera player had touched with the hand first and Aguilar's player was finally eliminated. Even with a very short replay, it was quite difficult to tell which competitor touched first.

Ramón García asked to play 'Too Velcroed' himself during the first and second programmes. After the game was played normally by the two teams, both Wilbur and Ramón played it for fun. This was easy for Wilbur, being a circus acrobat, but still Ramón managed to get velcroed too in his first try!

This heat's best worst answer in 'Hot Potato' goes to 1700 as the year that the Spongebob Squarepants television series started!

Game 7 was based on a famous Christmas party game in Spain, in which a person has to say or sing something while eating a shortbread cookie. Here it was a version of the broken telephone game, with the patron having to guess what the elves tried to communicate to each other and to the patron while eating shortbread cookies. During Aguilar's game, one of the players forgot to don the headphones, and one of the presents was deleted from the team's tally. Aguilar still won 2-1.

Despite having 2 Jokers, Aguilar only played one. This was aknowledged by host Ramón García, but no further explanation was given.

Additional Information

Alfacar Team Patron Lara Álvarez was one of the Spanish hosts of Eurogames (2019), together with Joaquín Prat. Previously connected to the Mediaset group, Lara signed to work for the public broadcaster and was thus invited to take part in Grand Prix.

Aguilar de Campoo made an incredible comeback. After winning the first game, they lost five games in a row and it seemed that Alfacar would win again as they had done in the 2023 summer final. On the contrary, Aguilar won the next three games, entering 'The Dictionary' rounds just a single point behind their rivals at 22-23. From here on it went their way, with Aguilar de Campoo getting both their words right and Alfacar getting their two wrong. This meant that at 28-17, Aguilar de Campoo's lead was unassailable so the third round was not played and the Aguilar de Campoo won the Christmas competition and its 30,000 euro prize.
