The Host
Town |
Fuenlabrada, Spain
Fuenlabrada is a city and municipality of Spain located
in the Community of Madrid. As of 2018, it had a population of 193,586, making
it the region's fourth most populated municipality. Its name derives from the
contraction of 'fuente labrada', Spanish for 'carved fountain'.
There is evidence of human settlement in the area dating back to the
Paleolithic (La Cantueña) and the Bronze Age (Casas del Cerro). Other
settlements in the current municipal area, including Loranca, Albas and
Fregacedos, existed during the Upper Middle Ages.
The
founding of the village of Fuenlabrada can be traced to the late 14th century,
when it was populated by former inhabitants of the nearby settlements of
Loranca, Albas and Fregacedos. The first mention of Fuenlabrada, which by the
early 16th century was part of the Land of Madrid, was recorded later in the
century, during the reign of Philip II, in the so-called Topographic Relations
of Philip II.
While the agricultural sector of the economy remained dominant, the making of
rosquillas and buns in the municipality became renowned among the surrounding
towns by the end of the 19th century. Following the end of the 1936–1939 Civil
War, in which some parts of Fuenlabrada endured serious damage, the Dirección
General de Regiones Devastadas undertook some building works in the
municipality during the 1940s and 1950s.
Fuenlabrada witnessed a dramatic population explosion in the 1970s and 1980s,
due to large scale immigration of young workers coming from the capital city
and other agrarian regions (chiefly Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha, Andalusia
and Galicia) seeking affordable prices in housing. Going from 7,369
inhabitants in 1970, the municipality reached a population of 18,442 by 1975,
and 65,181 in 1980, credited as the biggest relative population increase in
Spain during that decade. Foreign workers have also settled in the city, most
of them coming from Latin America, Africa, the Maghreb, China and Romania. The
demographic growth has continued in the ensuing decades.
The
city is home to basketball team Baloncesto Fuenlabrada. Their home games are
played at Fernando Martín sports centre, which has a capacity of 5,700.
CF
Fuenlabrada is the local football team, playing in Segunda División (second
tier in Spanish league). They play as home team at the Estadio Fernando
Torres, inaugurated by the footballer's parents on 1st September 2011. The
stadium has a capacity of 7,500.
Since 1979, the municipality has been a stronghold of the Spanish Socialist
Workers' Party (PSOE) and has been part of the so-called "red belt" of the
Community of Madrid. |
Additional
Information |
This year's Grand Prix was more ambitious than in 2023 with 7
heats leading to a semi-finals and a final. The four highest scoring of the 14
teams participating would qualify for the semi-finals. In the event of a tie,
qualification would be award to the tied team winning the greater number of
games in their heat.
The team of Bembibre was unable to make any progress at all at
the new game 'The Lucky Tree', which involved two contestants per team dressed
as squirrels trying to get nuts while in a conveyor belt. Despite their many
attempts, they weren't able to get any of the nuts and progress through the
game, giving rise to the suggestion that the game was too difficult. However,
when Almacelles team started the game, they made it look easy and retrieved
the first nut on their first run, securing an early win.
The game 'Sing and Don't Cry' was previously employed in the
FORTA editions, involving songs sung by different members of the public
members in their own style. In the FORTA years, the game was called 'Karaoke
Kid', but otherwise the game remained the same.
Some of the game titles made reference to well-known songs:
'Sing and Don't Cry' (Canta y no llores, a traditional Mexican song);
'Here We Do Have a Beach' (Aquí no hay playa (Here There Isn't a
Beach), a Spanish song by the group The Refrescos).
In one of the rounds of 'The Mathematician Penguins' something
unbelievable happened. None of the five remaining penguins was able to add
44+46. One of them tripped and the others stepped on the wrong result (100).
According to the rules, the first one to step in the wrong answer got
eliminated. Referee Asun Langa decided not to count the player that tripped,
which resulted in boos from the losing team.
For the first time in the history of Grand Prix, one of
the questions in 'Hot Potato' was answered on the first try, as the major of
Almacelles was asked how many different actors had played the role of James
Bond and immediately gave the answer (8). This was a confusing question as, at
the time of recording, there were only six official James Bonds (Sean Connery,
George Lazenby, Sir Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel
Craig). Presumably the question setters were taking unofficial Bonds into
account, meaning that Barry Nelson and David Niven, who both played the
character in unofficial adaptations of Casino Royale, would make up the
eight. Of course, they had not considered that, with Bob Holness and Toby
Stephens having played the role too - on radio - the correct answer was
arguably 10! This issue was highlighted by viewers during the transmission on
Grand Prix's social media channels. |

Personnel |
Cangas de Onís team patrons Twin Melody are twin sisters Aitana
Etxeberria and Paula Etxeberria and are well-known in Spain as internet
content creators and musicians. Since only one patron can compete at any one
time, Aitana played in 'Welcome to Piepolis', and in 'Super Bowling Pins',
while Paula contested 'Sing and Don't Cry', 'Hot Potato' and 'The Dictionary'. |
Returning
Teams and Competitors |
By appearing in this programme, Cangas de Onís became only the
second town to take part in Grand Prix that had previously participated
in Jeux Sans Frontières, having come 3rd in the fourth heat of the 1992
series at Třebíč, Czechoslovakia. The first such town was Arnedo, who
contested two heats in JSF 1990, finishing 2nd and 4th and lost their Grand
Prix
programme (Heat 10) in 1996. |
Additional
Information |
This programme, originally scheduled to be broadcast on the
night of Monday 15th July 2024, was postponed. This was due to a 5-hour
transmission on TVE La 1 celebrating the Spanish victory in the 2024 UEFA
European Football Championship on the previous evening. The Spain team had
beaten England 2-1, a late Spanish goal proving decisive. Rather than run the
second Grand Prix in the early hours of Tuesday morning, TVE elected to
repeat the first heat from half past midnight. This was met with complaints on
social media.
This decision proved particularly unpopular in the towns of Cangas de Onís
and Olvera,
where the local town councils had hired giant television screens so that
competitors, their families and other locals could gather to view their Grand Prix
participation in their respective town squares.
The pre-emption meant that Heat 2 was rescheduled for Monday
22nd July and the remaining 2024 programmes would, likewise, run one week
later than originally planned. When Heat 2 finally got shown, the debacle over
it's postponement almost certainly contributed to it losing more than 350,000
viewers compared to its debut show. It's audience share was also down by 3%,
although it was still comfortably above the 10% share threshold recognised as
a good performance.
Instead of proving a disturbance to the opposing team Olvera,
the vachette on Cangas de Onís' Joker game (Game 2) actually helped Olvera as
it provided bigger custard pies that were easier to score with.
Once again, a newly-introduced game involved a play on words
for its title. 'To Know and to Swim' (Saber y nadar) is a pun on the title of
the Spanish gameshow 'To Know and to Win' (Saber y ganar).
Unusually, the final score was only shown on screen as part of
the rankings in this programmes, hence the different appearance of our Final
Scoreboard compared to Heat 1. |

Additional
Information |
The transmission of this programme was slightly delayed due to
coverage of the 2024 Summer Olympics, held in Paris, France.
The team of Burela initially won the third game 'Basketball in
Huggies' - by 9pts to 6. However, three of their baskets were disallowed as the Burela competitor had landed on the conveyor belt and not (as
required) on the mat. One of these baskets was scored with the double value ball,
costing Burela 4pts from their score. This meant that Morata de Tajuña had
unexpectedly won the game 6-5.
The fourth game - 'Wikikids' - was played by the team patrons,
together with grandmothers hailing from the competing towns. In fact, Morata's
player was aged 82 and a great-grandmother. They had to identify concepts
explained by children, similar to the classic game show Juego de niños
(Child's Play).
The rankings in this heat were given incorrectly, as Burela
should have been shown above Bembibre due to the tie-breaking rules. The
ranking was displayed correctly from the following heat. We have corrected the
order on our own ranking above. |

Information |
Santa Domingo team patron Norma Duval had previously featured as a
patron in Grand Prix during the 1995, 1996, 1997, 1999 and 2001
seasons and was also the Spanish host of Belleze al Bagno 1990 along
with Paco Cecilio.
For the first time, no player was able to finish the game
'Climb the Way You Can' during its three rounds. This was because the slope
was somewhat steeper than in 2023. A similar situation occurred in 'Angry
Seagulls'. During 2023 season, the seagulls went back and forth, while now
they went up and down. This made the game more difficult and none of the teams
was able to score.
The show's broadcast started later than usual, and was stopped
briefly at 11.15pm to broadcast the 2024 Summer Olympics medal ceremony of the
Women's Basketball 3x3 competition, in which the Spanish team won the silver
medal. Grand Prix continued at 11.27pm after the ceremony had
concluded. |

Teams and Competitors |
Bullfighter Manuel Díaz (el Cordobés) had previously featured
as a patron in Grand Prix during the 1996 and 1997 seasons. |
Looks
Familiar? |
Game 8 - 'Pyjama Party' - was a game which has been featured
mutiple times in It's a Knockout and Jeux Sans Frontieres over
the years, a pillow fight over a pool. |
Additional
Information |
The second joker of Binissalem was, inexplicably, not played.
No reason was given during the programme.
With this strong performance, the Binissalem team zoomed to the
top of the rankings and guaranteed themselves a semi-final spot with two heats
remaining. |

Additional
Information |
The Medio Cudeyo team initially blazed a trail in this Grand
Prix heat, reaching the highest score after six games of any team up to
this point in the 2024 series - 20pts. However, their participation was not to
end well as they took just 2pts from the remaining three physical challenges and
failed on each round of The Dictionary. This left them with 13pts at the end
of the programme, the joint lowest score achieved after six heats. This meant that
Medio Cudeyo had gone from a highpoint of Grand Prix 2024 to rock bottom of
the rankings in quick succession. |

Additional
Information |
In Game 1 - 'The Ki-monos' - the team of San Adrián collected
two bananas, equalling the score of Llerena. However, their second banana was
gained in the last second of the game. Since the competitor was not inside the
volcano when permitted time expired (merely by milliseconds), the second San
Adrián banana was not counted and Llerena was awarded the victory.
Another VAR (Video Assistant Referee) moment occurred during
Game 2 - 'The Mathematician Penguins' - in its second-last round when both
penguins arrived seemingly simultaneously. A video replay determined that the
Llerena competitor had arrived a fraction of a second earlier. However, in the
final round it was the team of San Adrián finished the game as winners.
When Game 3 - 'Climb the Way You Can' - was played in Heat 4,
none of the teams was able to make a successful run. Here the opposite
happened, with two of the competitors being able to finish the game in just 9
seconds!
As well as being the team patron of San Adrián, Alba Carrillo
actually travelled to San Adrián on August 26th to be in the town for the
screening of the programme.
When it came to deciding the final rankings, a second
tie-breaker was necessary to choose the fourth semi-finalist as both Burela
and Tauste had won the same number of games. According to the rules, since
Tauste won their 'Super Bowling Pins' game and Burela didn't, Tauste qualified
for the semi-finals. |

Returning
Teams and Competitors |
San
Adrián had already taken part in the ill-fated show
Un
Pueblo para Europa in 1970 (incorrectly dated to 1973 in the
programme). Amalia, among the San Adrián supporters at the recording, was a
member of that team. She was briefly interviewed and some photographs from her
and the team's 1970 participation were shown. |
Additional
Information |
The final score was not shown on screen and has been mocked up
for the Final Scoreboard image above. Since Binissalem had already accumulated
sufficient points compared to San Adrian to win the semi-final, and there was
no league table at this point of the series, the third and final round of 'The
Dictionary' was not played
The second potato in the 'Hot Potato' game beat the record
time, recorded at the 1999 Grand Prix Final, lasting 3 minutes and 51
seconds.
This time, both team patrons had an active role in the
'Mission: Carrot' game. They had to move the bridge to make it more difficult
for their opponents to negotiate. This was especially difficult for
Binissalem, when Lala Chus gave an amazing performance, not letting any of
their players cross the bridge.
After Wilbur failed to cross the crazy logs in his usual
pantomime-esque way, dressed as a monkey, presenter Ramón García burst into
incontrollable laughter, which resulted in everyone including players, patrons
and judges laughing. Ramón ended up saying that Grand Prix should be on
television all year long - a sentiment echoed enthusiastically on social
media.
During Game 9 - 'The Super Bowling Pins' - Adrian, playing for
Binissalem, got hit in the head by the swinging ball and was knocked down with
31 seconds of the game remaining. He had by the point knocked over 5 San
Adrián bowling pins. He was checked out and his goggles were adjusted, but the
clock was not stopped so he ended up losing playing time and made no further
score. Fortunately, the competitor sustained no serious injuries from the
incident, but it pointed to an oversight in the game design as he more than
likely received more of an impact because of the goggles being a hard object
between his head and the swinging ball. When similar games had been played in
It's A Knockout, the competitors were hooded.

Information |
Wilbur's arrival in the studio for this second Semi-Final was
highly memorable as he performed a daring parachute skydive from a light
aircraft, recorded on location by an equally brave camera operator. Wilbur's
comedic arrival in the studio saw him land - without an open parachute - on
top of a stack of cardboard boxes which collapsed under his weight.
Despite having no bearing on the outcome of the 'Super Bowling
Pins' game, main referee Asun Langa remarked that one of the golden bowling
pins had been in a crouching position for most of the game and that this was
against the rules which stated that this was only legal once the ball had been
thrown. Asun told presenter Ramón García to knock down the offending pin,
which he did.
For the first time since the revival of the series in 2023, all
the words of the three rounds of 'The Dictionary' were correctly guessed. This
is why the points scored by both teams is unusually high compared to previous
contests in this series. |

The musical duo Los del Río (Antonio Romero and Rafael Ruiz) had previously featured as patrons
in Grand Prix during the 1995, 1996, 1997 and 1998 seasons. As is usual
when the Team Patron position is filled by a duo, only one of them at a time
could play in the games. Rafael played in 'Mission: Carrot' and 'The Super
Bowling Pins', while Antonio competed in 'Hot Potato' and 'The Dictionary'.
Los del Río are famous worldwide for their 1993 hit Macarena, which
topped the US billboard charts for 14 consecutive weeks, unique for a song in
Spanish. |
Additional
Information |
A comedic opening sequence to this Grand Prix Final parodied The A-Team title
sequence, with Ramón García (as Colonel Ramontxu), Cristinini (as Lieutenant
Cristinini), Wilbur (as Captain Wilbur) and the Vaquilla (heifer) mascot (as
Sergeant V. A. Quilla).
Next, the Grand Prix
presenters and members of the crew dressed in a variety of costumes which
would be seen during the show, dancing along to the opening song. A similar
sequence opened the corresponding fixture of the 2023 Grand Prix
series.
As the Olvera team had already accrued sufficient points to
secure the victory, even with a potential 3pts deduction, it was decided that
their final round of 'The Dictionary' did not need to be played.
The victorious team of Olvera won €30,000 for their city
council. This represented a big step forward compared to 2023, when €10,000
was the top prize.
For the second Friday in a row, a Grand Prix broadcast
scored poorly in terms of its ratings and audience share. On 30th August, the
first Semi-Final rated 819,000 viewers and a 8.9% share, which was similar to
the ratings for this final (782,000 viewers / 8.8% share). Ordinarily, an
audience share of less than 10% would be seen as a worrying statistic, but the
remainder of the series had bettered these scores and the 10% share threshold.
It is highly likely that Spanish broadcaster TVE will realise that the
decision to screen Grand Prix programmes on a Friday night was a
mistake and will not repeat this experiment. It is expected that the Monday
night figures will give TVE much confidence in the future of Grand Prix. |
