The Games
in Detail |
Game 5 - Romeos and Juliet
The fifth game - 'Romeos and Juliet' - was a standard game which was used
throughout the 1997 International Heats (but not in the International Final).
It was based on the famous play by English playwright William Shakespeare. Two
men (both playing Romeo) had to place a beam over a pit and cross it, after
which they had to retrieve sections of flower stem. The idea was to build a
flower which would reach up to the height of the raised balcony on which a
female team member (playing Juliet) was standing. However, the pieces were of
different lengths and it was not possible for the competitor to see beforehand
whether the piece he was choosing was long or short. For every country, there
was an equal number of long and short pieces and the players needed luck on
their side to select the longer pieces quickly. When the flower was tall
enough and the girl on the balcony was able to grab the top section of flower
and place it in a pot, a mechanism was triggered which allowed a rope ladder
to fall. The game finished when one of the men climbed it.
Game 10 - Pirates to the
Rescue
The tenth and final game - 'Pirates to the Rescue' - was the other standard game
that was used throughout the 1997 series (but again did not feature in the
International Final). When the game started, cannons were fired and two
competitors had to swim across a swimming pool and climb on a pirate ship via
its netting. On the ship, a girl was tied to a pole and had to be released.
When she had been released, all three competitors had to swim to the starting
point to finish the game. |
Additional Information |
The Hungarian team Gyöngyös won this heat in fine style, beating their
nearest rivals by a whopping 26 points. Their score, a hugely impressive 91
out of 96, meant that they dropped just five points all evening and accrued
94.79% of the points available to them. Quite remarkable! |

The Games
in Detail |
Game 7 - The Building
Blocks
In Game 7 - 'The
Building Blocks' - a woman had to hoist blocks up to a man who was
standing at the top of a ladder. Between them, they had to build a house from
six blocks (two of which were already stand as a base) and a roof. After the
first run with 4 countries, one of the roof boards broke and it was decided
that an additional third run was necessary to let all the countries have a
chance to play the game with unbroken equipment. During their attempt, the Hungarian team's
house fell down when they placed the roof on top of it.
With a score of 2 blocks in 1 minute and 9 seconds, they placed 8th on this game.
Game 8 - Bath Time
Tug-o-War
Game 8 - 'Bath
Time Tug-o-War' - was a
single-elimination tournament of the well known sporting contest, the tug of
war. The Dutch team (Almere) played their Joker on it, but were eliminated in
the first round aby Italy (Otranto). The reason for the loss can be blamed on
the their team members wearing the wrong shoes. The Almere team had been told
they had to play the eighth game with special shoes, but it transpired they
should have been told that this requirement was for Game 9, not 8. The Almere
team protested, but their claim was rejected by officials and Almere ended in
a poor sixth place on their Joker game.
Game 10 - Pirates to the
Rescue
The teams of Otranto (Italy) and Bovec (Slovenia) were
penalised on Game 10 - 'Pirates to the Rescue' - for climbing from the wooden part
of the ship rather than from the netting. |

The Games
in Detail |
Game 6 - Stringing the
Doughnuts
In Game 6 - 'Stringing
the Doughnuts' - the eight countries had 3 minutes to catch or pick
balloons which were falling down in an enormous bunch. These balloons where
shaped in a ring and had to be threaded. The Dutch team won this game by
collecting an incredible 35 balloons.
Game 8 - Human Bowling Orbs
In Game 8 - 'Human Bowling
Orbs' - the Dutch competitor, whose team were at
that point placed 3rd in the competition, was unable to move the ball
and consequently, he made no progress at all in the 2 minute time limit and the Dutch were placed last. This was the start of a slow
descent down the leaderboard, as they scored poorly in the last two games as
well. They eventually finished in a disappointing 7th place.
Game 10 - Pirates to the
Rescue
The
Slovenian team of Vuzenica was penalised on the last game - 'Pirates to the
Rescue' - for not following
the rules and were consequently relegated to last place on the game. |

The Games
in Detail |
Game 9 - The Cabinet of
Toys
In Game 9 - 'The Cabinet of Toys' - teams had to climb and enormous
cabinet and look for toys which were hidden in its drawers. The toys, once
found, had to be placed on top of the cabinet. Amusingly, among these toys -
for all eight countries - were the Jokers! |
Additional Information |
After nine games, the Dutch team of Laarbeek was leading with 55 points,
with Vila Franca de Xira of Portugal just behind on 54. However, an 8th
placing on the final game put paid to Dutch hopes and they fell back to finish
4th overall. |

The Games
in Detail |
Game 2 - The Crocodile Hunt
The
French team from Avignon got a second chance to complete the second game - 'The Crocodile
Hunt' - as their first attempt was hampered by a mechanical failure. The team
eventually placed 2nd on the game, receiving 14 points for their troubles as
they had played their Joker on the game. The Netherlands did even better,
winning the game and scoring 16 points - as they had also chosen this game to
play their Joker.
Game 5 - Romeos and Juliet
In
the fifth game - 'Romeos and Juliet' - Dutch team Heerlen and Portuguese team
Bragança's rope ladder mechanisms failed and they had to throw the ladder down
by hand. This was not permitted and it was decided the two teams had to repeat
the game. In this second run, Heerlen got a time of 1 minute 44 seconds and
won the game with it. The team of Szarvas finished second with 1 minute 49
seconds, but they disagreed with this decision. However, their protest was
rejected. Bragança finished fifth on their second try with 2 minutes 12
seconds on the clock. |
Additional Information |
From the fourth game onwards, the competition became a two-horse race between the
Netherlands (Heerlen) and Hungary (Szarvas). After nine games, Heerlen was in
first place with Szarvas just 2 points behind. In the final game, two men had
to swim across a pool to reach a ship, where they had to free a woman tied to
a pole. After she was freed, the teams had to swim back to the start. Heerlen
finished in 1'09, only one second before Szarvas, who finished in 1 minute 10
seconds, giving
Heerlen the first of two Dutch wins in Jeux Sans Frontičres 1997.
Heerlen's victory marked the first Dutch victory in Jeux Sans Frontičres
since 1977, when Ooststellingwerf won the Belgian heat in Antwerpen (which was
the third Dutch victory of that year). The Netherlands had left the programme
after the 1977 series and only returned this year, meaning that the Dutch only
took eight events to return to winning ways after Ooststellingwerf's victory
twenty years previous.
Heerlen team member Monique Joosten was awarded the Best
Competitor Award for her performance throughout this event. |

The Games
in Detail |
Game 6 - The Gi-Ants Slalom
In Game 6 - 'The
Gi-Ants Slalom' - two contestants were dressed as an ant and they
had to crawl backwards to the finish in the quickest time. They also had an
egg between their legs and were not allowed to touch it with their hands.
However, the Greek and Slovenian teams did this and were penalised as a
result.
Game 7 - The Apple Trees
Game 7
- 'The Apple Trees' - was inspired by the legend of William Tell. The original plan was
to play this game with crossbows, but this was deemed too dangerous. Team
members had to throw tennis balls instead.
Game 10 - Pirates to the
Rescue
The team of Felgueiras (Portugal) was penalised on Game 10 -
'Pirates to the Rescue'. The rules of the game stated that both of the male
competitors had to climb aboard the ship and assist in releasing their damsel
from her shackles before all three could disembark and swim back to the
finishing podium. However, although the second of the male Portuguese
competitors climbed aboard the deck of the ship, he immediately dived back
into the pool and made his way to the podium. This left his team-mate to
rescue the female alone and then they swam back to the podium together. The
team were penalised at the point of misdemeanour and were only given a score
at that point. |
Additional Information |
Raalte team member Dianne Paalman had to stand in for fellow team member
Esther Ogink in Game 10 - 'The Pirate Ship' - after Esther sustained an injury
while participating in Game 7 - 'William Tell'. |

The Games
in Detail |
Game 7 - Conquest of the
Castle
In
the seventh game - 'Conquest of the Castle' - contestants had to use a battering ram
to open three gates. However, the Dutch, Slovenian and Hungarian teams were
penalised because they used their shoulders to open the doors and not the ram.
Game 8 - Threading the
Twine
In the eighth game-
'Threading the Twine' - two
players had to stand on a beam, with one leaning back to catch a cord while
the other made counterweight. They had to pass the cord through a ring,
without falling in the pool. Were this to happen, they would have to restart
the procedure. After passing the first ring, the cord reaches two more team
members on a second beam. They had to pass the cord through a second ring,
again without falling in the pool, and then had to swim across the pool while
passing the cord through six further rings. Hungary was the only team to reach
the finish, but they did not comply with the rules. During the passage of the
first ring, their players fell in the pool but continued to play rather than
restart the action. All other teams protested and eventually Denis Pettiaux
reduced the score by only one passage in one minute, still giving them a
fourth place, instead of a straight disqualification.
Game 10 - Pirates to the
Rescue
The team of Viseu (Portugal) was penalised on Game 10 - 'Pirates
to the Rescue' for an infringement which was not clearly described in the
transmission. |

Additional Information |
As part of the opening ceremony of this ninth heat, parachutists descended
from the skies towards the venue and had to land in the swimming pool.
Unfortunately, the Hungarian and Dutch parachutists both missed their target,
landing in the parking lot next to the arena - with nothing but their pride
damaged. However, the Slovenian parachutist did not appear and it was revealed
that he had refused to jump. Each parachutist had a national flag attached to
them - and due to an oversight the Netherlands flag was hung upside down! By
time the Hungarian parachutist had landed, her flag was nowhere to be seen.
After nine games, the Italian team of Norcia was leading with 61 pts. The
Portugese team of Parades were a distant 9 points behind in second place on 52
pts. The tenth game (worth double points) proved to be the fly in the ointment
for the Italians, as they placed 7th on this game, scoring 4 pts. Meanwhile,
Portugal placed 2nd and scored 14 pts. This moved Parades into 1st place, one
point ahead of Norcia, on 66 pts. This last-minute debacle meant that Norcia
not only lost what would have been the only win for Italy in 1997, but also
the Italian place in the International Final. Val di Sole proved to be the
Italian qualifiers for the International Final with a better 2nd placing (68
points).
The
Portuguese broadcaster RTP transmitted this heat one night earlier than usual,
to allow for the broadcast of a football match on Friday 29th August 1997.
