After 1992's high of eight countries, the countries particpating was back down to seven in 1993, with Spain, France and 1992 'wooden spoon' team, Tunisia backing out. However, the numbers were beefed up again with the arrival of Greece and Hungary, both completely new to Jeux Sans Frontières. A single second place was the highlight for the Welsh teams in 1993, with Llantrisant qualifying for the International Final.

For the first time in three years, there was a change to the number of games in each heat - reduced from ten games to eight. There was also the welcome return of Jokers, for the first time since the programme’s revival in 1988.

1992 competitors Czechoslovakia (CS) returned as Czech Republic (CZ), following their country's split creating the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
