Media Attention

After this first International Heat of the 1990 series was screened by TVE in Spain, complete with Almagro's pathetic performance in Italy, one disgruntled viewer wrote a letter to the editor of the El Pais (The Country) newspaper, asking, "When is Spain going to stop embarrassing itself in Jeux Sans Frontières?" The letter was printed in the 20th July 1991 edition, by which time the successful Jaca team had already answered in no uncertain terms by recording Spain's first victory since joining the series in 1988.

Team Personnel

Antonio Capillas, a member of the victorious Spanish team of Jaca (1), is the father of Nacho Capillas, who would later represent Jaca in Eurogames 2019. In common with Antonio, Nacho's exploits 19 years later met with success as the Jaca team won their International Heat in Rome, Italy, and qualified for the International Final at the same venue.

Additional Information

After an unsuccessful first year in Jeux Sans Frontières in 1988 and a gap year in 1989, Spain recorded their first victory in the series with the Jaca team. They had taken just 11 programmes before gaining their first win.

Returning Teams and Competitors

The team of Arnedo (La Rioja) was the only town that competed in both Jeux Sans Frontières (1990, Heats 3 and 7) and in the Spanish Domestic Series Grand Prix del Verano (1996, Heat 10).

Music Played During this Event

Introduction of Teams -
Born to Run
(Bruce Springsteen)

Additional Information

The fifth game of this heat - 'The Presenters' Game' - must rank as one of the most dull, pointless games in the history of Jeux Sans Frontières. It involved presenters, one at a time, emptying canisters of jewellery items into a larger jar. The point of the game was for the teams to guess how many individual items of jewellery had been emptied out. We'd love to tell you how it ended, but JSFnetGB fell into a very deep, very bored sleep...

Additional Information

This was a very tight, competitive heat. Curiously enough, the Spanish team of Jaca won the competition without winning a single game, being the only team not to do so on the night - even the last-placed Domagnano from San Marino won Game 2! Jaca won the competition by coming 2nd in 6 games (one of which was the all-important double-scoring final game) and finishing 3rd once, 4th once and 5th twice.
