Additional Information

For the 1987 series of Channel Ten's It's A Knockout, the scoring system for qualifying was changed and thirty brand new games were designed and played out over the course of the series along with many old favourites. State points were dropped, and actual points scored were used instead to determine the sem-finalists.

Prize money in each of the heats was $1,000 for the winner. From this year, a $500 second prize was also introduced.

Team Personnel

Banksia Park team captain Tony Basnec was replaced on Game 2 - 'Marathon Monks' - by Chris Gauci, who was promoted from the reserves. The reason for the replacement was not announced and Tony went on to feature in other games, so presumably the change was for tactical reasons.

Additional Information

There was a captioning error on Game 5 - 'Superguy' - suggesting that the New South Wales (Cronulla) team had gained 1pt along with Victoria (Thornbury), whereas in actuality New South Wales had finished the game in last and the 2nd place points split was actually between Victoria and Queensland (St. Lucia).

The Victorian team of Thornbury checked out from It's A Knockout with another 4th place finish, their fourth in total. Across their four contests they managed just 21pts in total.

Additional Information

New South Wales team Avalon seriously under performed in this first Semi-Final. They were pre-competition favourites, having won each of their four Round 1 heats. Their luck ran out on the night and they were unable to win a single game. With just 6 points on the scoreboard (and therefore on the qualifying board for the Final), all they could hope was that their Round 2 rivals from New South Wales would perform even worse! Remarkably, they were not to be disappointed and made the cut with just 6 points, whereas winners Gawler would not reach the final, being outscored by their own rivals. Sometimes, It's A Knockout is just not fair...

Prize money for this event was $10,000.

Additional Information

The fourth game - 'String of Pearls' - was played over three runs comprising two heats and a final. In the first heat, the Queensland team from Norman Park limped in in second behind Melbourne City of Victoria. However, Norman Park came out winners after all because the Victorian team were disqualified for losing their string of tyres as they had crossed the finishing line. The Queensland team then turned things around in the final and defeated the St. George team from New South Wales. Sadly for the Queensland team, this was the only decent result they achieved in the event.

The Melbourne City team were also disqualified from the sixth game - 'Tarzan Swings' - because they didn't wait for all their team members to board their log before making off for the end of the course. Two disqualifications from six games would usually lead to the transgressors firmly rooted to the bottom of the table, but remarkably, despite only scoring on four games, the Victorian team still came away with the win on the night!

Additional Information

St. George team captain Alan Andrews badly twisted his angle jumping down to the mats on the third game 'Jigsaw Ladder' and had to retire from the event, with reserve team member Ray Bentley called up to replace him in the remaining games. Alan's injury was checked in hospital and was serious enough to rule him out of the remainder of St. George's campaign. However, he did attend the subsequent events to support his team.

Team Personnel

Due to the injury that he sustained in the previous round that St. George contested, team captain Alan Andrews was unable to represent the team in this heat. Therefore, Bruce Laverton captained the team for this heat and Ray Bentley was promoted from the reserves. Alan attended this event as a show of support for his team mates.

Additional Information

The Woodville team from South Australia took the wooden spoon for the 1987 It's A Knockout series, having scored just 6 points across four Domestic Heats, including three scores of zero! A quite shocking performance, but not the worst in the history of the Australian series... That dubious accolade goes to Frankston, who scored just 4 points across four heats in the 1986 series.

Additional Information

The New South Wales team St. George had a seemingly straightforward task ahead of them in this Semi-Final. To reach the final, all they needed to do was score more than the six points that their State rivals Avalon had scored in the first Semi-Final. Incredibly, they failed not only to beat that score, but also to register a single point on the night. The St. George team finished last on every single game of this 2nd Semi-Final.

Prize money for this event was $10,000, with the runner-up team taking home a cheque for $1,000.

Additional Information

Presenters Billy J. Smith and Fiona MacDonald entered the arena astride Peggy, a 61-year-old elephant from the Australia's Wonderland theme park. Fiona appeared far more composed and at ease riding the animal than Billy!

Prize money on offer to the winner of this Final was $25,000, with $5,000 for the second placed finishers.

This was a very tight final, with just 2pts between 1st and equal 3rd. In the end it was decided on a Joker win by Daisy Hill (Queensland), who were in last place prior to the final game. Both Avalon (New South Wales) and Melbourne City (Victoria) had squandered their Joker games while Stirling (South Australia) tied theirs. The additional 2pts that Stirling lost in that game by not winning it outright proved to be the difference between them and Daisy Hill - had Stirling scored 8pts rather than 6pts on their Joker, they would have ended up as joint winners with Daisy Hill.

By winning this Grand Final with her Daisy Hill team, Jacinta Herden became the first - and only - female team captain to win an Australian It's A Knockout final. Surprisingly, Queensland were victorious having registered just two game wins - including their Joker game - and zero scores on the remaining four games!

As had occurred after the conclusion of both the 1985 and 1986 series of It's A Knockout, Channel Ten commenced a run of repeats of the series from the following week in the same transmission slot.
