The Venue

Crans-sur-Sierre, Switzerland

Crans-sur-Sierre is a small ski resort located in the canton of Valais in the south-west of Switzerland. The resort nestles on a plateau in the Swiss Alps at an elevation of about 1,500m (4,921ft). As the resort grew in popularity, it was merged with the nearby resort of Montana in the mid 1970s and has since been known worldwide as Crans-Montana, which is often utilised as a venue in the Alpine Skiing World Cup calendar.

Akin with many Swiss ski resorts, it has had many famous residents including French chef Michel Roux, British actor and director Kathy Burke, magician Ali Bongo, international golfers Adam Scott, Sergio García and brothers Edoardo and Francesco Molinari. English actor Roger Moore (James Bond 007 and The Saint) has owned a chalet in the resort for many years since moving from Gstaad, and even Sophia Loren had an apartment overlooking the 8th green of the resort's golf course!

Additional Information

Crans-Montana became the second of only two teams in all post-1966 Jeux Sans Frontières competitions to qualify for the International Final held in their home town and return home with the Winner’s Trophy. This feat was first achieved in Interneige 1977 by French team Les Gets.

The Italian team from Cavalese-Val di Fiemme became the first team to compete in two consecutive Winter Finals and were in line to also be the first to win two Finals consecutively. Going into the final game they were trailing the leaders by 5pts. However there was still a slim chance of victory with the game carrying double points but this would require the team to be victorious and Switzerland to finish in 4th place and second placed France in 3rd place. At the end of the game the team were no match for the others and unfortunately finished in 4th place on the game.
