Additional Information

After eleven years of Spiel Ohne Grenzen Domestic Heats being contested by two teams in each programme, the format was changed from this year. Just two heats were held in 1978 and each of these events involved five teams. The first three placed teams from each of the two heats would qualify for the International series. A draw had taken place before the commencement of the series which decided the assigned International Heats for the top three positions. The pre-series draw saw the first three qualified teams participating in three of the first four International Heats. Therefore, the teams not only had to secure qualification but also had the added incentive to finish in the position which took them to the International Heat venue that would meet their preference.

Additional Information

The pre-series draw saw the second three qualified teams participating in the final three International Heats. The seventh team for the International series were given automatic qualification as hosts of the West German International Heat.

This heat ended with two teams sitting in third place with 24pts each. As only the top three teams from each heat could qualify, a tie-breaker game was staged from which the Drohlshagen team emerged victorious.

Unlike previous years’ Domestic series where most were inter-state competitions, all teams in this heat came from towns or cities located in the West German state of Nordrhein-Westfalen.

This heat was attended by the Musikkapelle Waidring (Waidring Band) from Austria during a promotional trip to launch the 1. Mittelwestfalen-Schau (1st Mid-Westphalia Show) and they entertained the crowd before and after the programme.
